Information for Carers

A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.

Becoming a carer can be a gradual process with some people not recognising the changing nature of their relationship with the person they support.

Sheffield Carers Centre

Sheffield Carers Centre provide support to adults (18+ years old) providing unpaid care to someone else in Sheffield They have trained staff who understand the pressures of caring and can help with any aspect of the caring role. Support includes:

  • Carer Advice Line (0114 272 8362)
  • Carer Card - This offers discounts on a wide range of services, products and activities.
  • Carer Activities & Carers Workshops
  • Legal Advice Clinic
  • Carer Café & Support Groups
  • Carer Connect - A telephone support service providing regular phone calls from volunteers to reduce social isolation and connect carers with their local community.
  • Emergency Planning
  • Carer's Assessment
  • Time for a Break Grant - Small grants for short breaks or activities that support wellbeing and help you take a break from your caring role. They will assess your eligibility as part of a Carers Assessment.

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway

Sheffield Mencap and Gateway’s carers services supports unpaid/family carers of somebody with a learning disability or autism. They can provide help, advice and practical support. They also offer 1-2-1 support, workshops on common carer issues and a range of social, support and wellbeing groups.
